It sounds like Christopher Johnson is putting all his faith in Joe Douglas to shape the future of the Jets.
Former Browns head coach Hue Jackson is known for his awful record in Cleveland, but that didn't stop him from taking a shot at one of the newest members of the NFL head coaching fraternity. The Falcons, Lions and Texans already need a head coach, and the Jaguars will likely become the next team soon. The key to Douglas’s search will be pitching the job to potential candidates.
The general manager will run the search for the next head coach, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, after the team fired Adam Gase on Sunday night. Johnson will have the final say in the hire, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, and team president Hymie Elhai will assist in the search, but it appears that Douglas’ football acumen will carry the most weight.

- If the Browns get to have their way early, then it will be the under, but I highly doubt that happens. Spread: Chiefs by 10 points Another Kansas City Chiefs game, another double digit spread.
This is unequivocally the correct move, and one the organization failed to make in its previous head-coaching searches. The Johnson family utilized search firms and endorsements from other big names in the league to pick the past two head coaches, neither of which worked out well.
The Jets hired former general managers Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf in 2015, who hand-picked Mike Maccagnan for the open general manager job. That led to the hiring of Todd Bowles, who went 24-40 in four seasons with the Jets. Johnson kept Maccagan after firing Bowles in 2018, and the two chose Gase after a late phone call from Peyton Manning reportedly sealed the deal. We all know how that ended.
It looks like Johnson finally learned from the franchise’s past mistakes. Douglas, who has vast experience in two of the most successful franchises in recent memory – the Eagles and the Ravens – will spearhead the search for his coach for potentially the next four years. He’ll have a lot of talented people to choose from at the professional and collegiate ranks, including Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Colts DC Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Wink Martindale, Titans OC Arthur Smith, Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and others, according to NFL Network.
Douglas will likely cast a wide net for the next head coach, though, and should take his time to find Gase’s replacement considering how he’s built the team heading into 2021. Douglas doesn’t have any experience picking coaches – he was a talent evaluator in Baltimore, Chicago and Philadelphia – but he’s likely made a lot of great connections over his long career in the league.
There are a couple of great candidates with ties to Douglas, but the Jets aren’t the only team on the hunt for a new head coach. The Falcons, Lions and Texans already need a head coach, and the Jaguars will likely become the next team soon.
The key to Douglas’s search will be pitching the job to potential candidates. Fortunately, Douglas set the team up for future success with a couple of savvy moves this past offseason. Not only do the Jets possess the second overall pick in this year’s draft, but they’ll also have six picks in the first 100 selections in 2021, four in the first three rounds in 2022 and more than $72 million in cap space this offseason. That’s an enviable job for a potential hire.
Whomever Douglas picks will have a connection to the GM the past three head coach never had. Gase, Bowles and Rex Ryan were all arranged marriages with their respective general managers. Only Ryan enjoyed relative success, and that lasted just two seasons. That won’t be the case this time. While Johnson will still have some level of say in the hiring, Douglas should still lead the search and should effectively make the final call after all the vetting and interviews.
This is an important step for the Jets. It shows the team is willing to break from its old mold to build a better franchise. It also shows Johnson trusts Douglas and understands his vision in spite of the Jets’ 9-22 record under the GM’s direction. There were a lot of mistakes made by the previous regimes of Maccagnan and John Idzik, and Douglas has tried hard to dismantle what they did the past two offseasons with frugal offseason spending and shedding players with bad contracts or trading them acquire draft capital.
Douglas could alter the course of the organization with this hire, and it only makes sense he should be the one to find the right coach to usher in the new era and work hand-in-hand to deliver the plan he’s set in motion. This coach will play a crucial role in developing the Jets’ young talent, which very well may include a quarterback at the top of the first round.
Johnson finally made the right first move in finding the next Jets head coach. Now, it’s on Douglas to pick the right one.

Browns vs. Chiefs - Predictions
- Score Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs 37 Cleveland Browns 33
- Best Bet: Over
The only team favored by more than a touchdown in the Divisional Round is the Kansas City Chiefs.
That shouldn't come as a surprise as Kansas City is an odds-on favorite to win the AFC Championship next week.
The Chiefs have been the team to beat all year after going 14-1 with their starters in the regular season, so the Cleveland Browns will have their work cut out for them on Sunday afternoon.

How to Handicap Browns vs. Chiefs
Cleveland won its first playoff game in 25 years last week.
The Browns roared out to a 28-0 lead over the Steelers in Pittsburgh, and they held on from there as the Steelers continued to shoot themselves in the foot with five turnovers on the day.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield avoided making any crucial mistakes, while running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt both had solid days against Pittsburgh’s defense.
The Chiefs are the most dangerous offense in the NFL.
QB Patrick Mahomes had another incredible season, and both tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill were named First Team All-Pros.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is 22-5 after bye weeks in the regular season and playoffs, so that will make things even more difficult for the Browns.
Kansas City has been far from invincible though.
While the Chiefs only lost twice all year, they went 1-7 ATS over the second half of the season and didn’t win a game by more than six points.

Betting Analysis - Cleveland Browns
Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski will be back on the sidelines after missing last week’s game due to COVID-19.
The Browns aren’t being given much of a chance though, as they finished with a negative point differential in the regular season and went 3-4 against opponents that were .500 or better.
Mayfield has become an effective game manager one season after leading the AFC in interceptions. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes for over 3,500 yards (7.3 YPA) with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. Mayfield has only thrown one interception in his last 10 games.
Cleveland loves to run the ball with Chubb and Hunt.
Chubb averaged at least 5.0 YPC for the third straight season, running for 1,067 yards (5.6 YPC) and 12 touchdowns in just as many games.
Hunt wasn’t as effective, picking up 841 yards (4.2 YPC) with six touchdowns, but he is an extremely reliable receiver out of the backfield.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s season-ending injury tested the depth of this receiving corps. Jarvis Landry wasn’t as effective without OBJ on the other side of the field, but Rashard Higgins and Austin Hooper emerged as decent complementary options.
This defense should be better after allowing a boatload of yards to Pittsburgh last week.
Starting cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson missed that game due to COVID, but both players are expected to be available on Sunday.
Myles Garrett is going to be asked to do a lot in this game, and he is listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury.
Betting Analysis - Kansas City Chiefs
We are running out of superlatives to describe Mahomes.
He is only in his third year as a starter, and he has already been named NFL MVP and a Super Bowl MVP. Only a handful of players in NFL history have won both honors.
In five previous playoff games, Mahomes has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 1,474 yards (8.0 YPA) with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.
His stats are even more impressive considering he has been sacked four times in three of those games. Kansas City has scored at least 30 points in each of its five postseason appearances with Mahomes at the helm.
The Chiefs are hoping that Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be on the field this Sunday.
Edwards-Helaire hasn’t played since suffering a high ankle sprain against New Orleans in Week 15. He was limited in practice earlier this week, and he didn’t see the field on Thursday. The rookie from LSU has been much more efficient than any of Kansas City’s other running backs, so his presence would make this offense more effective.
Next Browns Head Coach Odds Live
Hill and Kelce have both had incredible seasons in this offense. They each posted monster numbers despite missing the season finale, and they are the most dangerous receiving tandem in the league.
Their production leads to opposing defenses focusing on them, allowing players like Mecole Hardman, DeMarcus Robinson, and Sammy Watkins to have more opportunities to break free in coverage. Watkins is questionable to play due to a calf injury though.
If Kansas City doesn’t defend its title, the defense is likely to be the reason.
The Chiefs have been subpar on this side of the ball in 2020.
Tyrann Mathieu and the defense have performed pretty well, but the run defense has taken a step back.
Frank Clark and Chris Jones haven’t made the same impact up front that they did during the 2019 season.

Last Meeting
Kansas City hammered Cleveland 37-21 in the only previous meeting between Mahomes and Mayfield in the NFL. Both quarterbacks played well, and the Chiefs finished the game with 499 total yards of offense.
These two quarterbacks took part in the wildest game in recent college football history in 2016.
Mayfield led Oklahoma to a 66-59 win over Mahomes and Texas Tech in a game that saw an FBS record 1,708 total yards.
While the Sooners won the game, Mahomes broke numerous records by completing 52 of 88 passes for 734 yards with five touchdowns and an interception.
